Cáncer gástrico: visión y misión de un cirujano endoscopista “Oración Rafael Casas Morales 2007”
Resumen
He seleccionado el tema del cáncer gástrico por su importancia: mientras no se controle esta enfermedad seguirá siendo tema de preocupante actualidad y porque desde nuestro espacio tenemos la obligación profesional de cuidar la vida de nuestros pacientes y esta enfermedad está acabando con ella. Además, en el departamento de Norte de Santander tenemos una modesta experiencia que queremos compartir. Llama la atención el poco interés de las autoridades sanitarias por este problema, teniendo en cuenta que la vida es un derecho fundamental consagrado en nuestra Constitución Nacional.
Historia
Temible y fatal enfermedad que ataca a la humanidad desde sus comienzos; los primeros indicios sobre su existencia aparecen consignados en jeroglíficos y papiros del antiguo Egipto, 3.000 años a. C. Hipócrates, quien vivió en los años 460 a 370 a. C., describió por primera vez la enfermedad utilizando * Conferencia dictada durante el XXXIII Congreso Nacional Avances en Cirugía en agosto de 2008 en la ciudad de Cartagena. ** Cirujano honorario, Hospital Universitario Erasmo Meoz, Cúcuta. los términos carcinos y carcinoma, y habló de su grave pronóstico. Propuso una teoría carcinogenética en la cual planteaba que la enfermedad penetraba desde el exterior a través de la piel e infiltraba los tejidos y órganos internos. Galeno de Pérgamo (130-200 d. C.) coincidió con Hipócrates. Al final del primer milenio (980-1037) apareció Avicena, el más eminente exponente de la medicina árabe del siglo XI, quien creó la Enciclopedia médica de Avicena o Canon de Avicena, compendio muy bien estructurado que incluía todo el conocimiento médico existente en la época de las civilizaciones griegas y del islam, donde se encuentra una posible descripción de cáncer gástrico.
